The winds of change are blowing through the corridors of Belize's Criminal Justice System as Attorney General Anthony Sylvester takes the helm with a vision for comprehensive reform. With the support of Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa, and a commitment to progressive undertakings, the call goes out to all stakeholders to join hands in this transformative journey towards a more just and rehabilitative system.

During a recent tour of the Belize Central Prison, Attorney General Sylvester gained firsthand insight into the state of affairs within the prison walls. From sewing workshops where young men craft uniforms to an excellent woodwork shop, a piggery, chickens, and an entire farm, the prison is embracing reform and rehabilitation. The visit also showcased a modern medical facility, highlighting the need for compassionate and comprehensive care for inmates.

In a candid conversation, Minister Musa revealed the Attorney General's ambitious vision, which includes alternative sentencing for minor offenses - a progressive practice already in place in the UK. Such innovative approaches aim to minimize incarceration rates for low-level offenses, offering offenders an opportunity to rehabilitate and reintegrate into society.

However, the success of these reform efforts hinges on the collective involvement of all stakeholders.
