Small farmers in developing countries often face difficulties in accessing resources and markets for their produce, and the aftermath of natural disasters can exacerbate these challenges. However, a relief program in Belize is aiming to provide support to farmers impacted by Hurricane Lisa.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise has partnered with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the Government of Italy, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to offer relief funding to small farmers affected by the hurricane.

The program will use digital vouchers and mobile money services to provide accessible and secure distribution of funds to farmers. While digital solutions can offer benefits in terms of efficiency and accessibility, it's important to consider the context and needs of each community and adapt solutions accordingly.

The support provided through the digital vouchers will benefit some 727 farmers, providing them with agricultural inputs, equipment, and food assistance. The relief program will help farmers and their families to restart their farming activities and meet their basic needs in the aftermath of the hurricane.

It's worth noting that ongoing support may also be provided to small farmers to help them build resilience to future shocks, such as through training programs, access to credit, or support for climate-smart agricultural practices.

While this relief program is a step in the right direction, it's important to recognize that small farmers in developing countries often face ongoing challenges in accessing resources and markets for their produce. More sustainable solutions will be needed to help these farmers build long-term resilience and prosperity. However, this relief program is a positive example of how various organizations can work together to support vulnerable communities during times of crisis.
