Belize City, Tuesday, 11th April 2023

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Fitzroy Yearwood, the head of communications for the Belize Police Department (BPD), passed away on Tuesday, April 11th, at the age of 47. His untimely death was attributed to a massive stroke he suffered on Saturday evening, which left him in critical condition and unable to recover.

Yearwood had a long and distinguished career with the BPD, serving twice as the press officer under former Commissioner of Police (ComPol) Allen Whylie and current ComPol Chester Williams since June 2021. He presided over the daily police press briefings with the media and was a familiar face to many. His dedication and professionalism in his role were widely recognized and appreciated.

News of Yearwood's passing came as a shock to his colleagues, friends, and family, who have all expressed their condolences and heartfelt sympathy for their loss. The Honourable Kareem Musa, Minister of Police, spoke fondly of Yearwood, calling him a valiant, charismatic, and humble officer who always managed to bring a smile to his colleagues' faces. "From north to south, you will be forever missed," he said.

The Minister of Tourism, Honourable Anthony Mahler, and the Belize Tourism Board also paid tribute to Yearwood, recognizing his contributions to the BPD and the wider community. "ASP Yearwood became a pillar of the Belize Police Department during his years of service. His passing will be felt by many, and we offer our deepest condolences and warmest sympathies to his family, friends, and the police department," their message read.

As a senior member of the police force, Yearwood will receive full honors from the BPD, although details of his funeral have yet to be announced. The BPD is expected to issue an official statement in due course, but for now, Yearwood's colleagues and loved ones are mourning the loss of a dedicated and respected member of the police force.
